broken phone
September 6, 2006
I have a Cingular 8125 phone. A nice Windows Mobile 5 PDA Phone. Unfortunately, a few weeks ago I put it on the backpocket of my jeans and sat on it. Next thing I know, it has cracked screen. The LCD is fine but the digitizer is broken and it lost the touchscreen capability. The phone has a sliding keyboard and I can use it by keyboard alone (barely).
I found 2 places that can fix it (including the official HTC service). Both cost approximately $170 + shipping and handling for the repair. In the mean time, I’ve been reading about the new Cingular 8525 that’s supposed to be announced in one or two months. A friend also suggested the Treo 750 which is expected to be announced not much later. I definitely don’t need the latest and greatest phone. However, I may not be able to resist the temptation either.
I guess I can wait a little bit longer and see the prices for the new phones.

Why not buy yourself a Treo 700wx? Then give it to me after you realize it won’t work on Cingular.
But seriously, I think the Treo 750 will be a much better phone than the 8525.

[...] I mentioned that I broke my Cingular 8125. While the cost of fixing the digitizer has gone down, it’s still significant. I also found out that less than a year through my contract, I was already eligible for an upgrade. I guess this is the advantage of Cingular Premier with the place I work with. I was following the development of the Cingular 8525 (aka HTC Hermes). However, a friend just recently acquired an HTC S620 (or the Dash for T-Mobile) Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone. Cingular also announced the Samsung Blackjack (SGH-I607), a similar smartphone which was to be released at the same day as the Cingular 8525. When they are available (on the midnight of the release day) I finally got to choose. I chose the Samsung Blackjack. Not only that it’s half the price. It’s much lighter and sleeker as well. There were times when I almost regretted carrying my *125 because of the bulk and weight. I also wanted to try a Windows Mobile Smartphone instead of a Pocket PC phone. [...]

Glad you didn’t get the 8525, because I’m out here surfing for info having a broken screen on mine. I didn’t even sit on it, had it protected in my purse, and it somehow is broken.
I also had another HTC phone, the Verizon *6700, and that screen broke as well. grrrr
Anyway, the blackjack is a cool phone. good luck.
